Originating in Holland in the early 20th century, the Welsummer chicken is part of the elite class of chocolate brown egg layers. The Welsummer was originally created by crossing breeds like the Cochins, Wyandottes, Leghorns, Barnvelders, and Rhode Island Reds.
This chicken has similar characteristics to many of the other popular layers, such as hardiness, excellent egg laying ability, dual purpose (meat and utility), and beautiful plumage. But what sets this breed apart are the beautiful chocolate colored eggs. They can be extremely cold hardy, laying fairly regularly throughout winter during their prime laying years.
